iPhone Finally FULLY Arabized!

Another sweet feature is you can create your own customer source by selecting your favorite programs through your favorite repositories on the site. MMS Works!

FINALLY! With the latest release of SwirlyMMS I finally got the iPhone to send and receive an MMS message! Of course, there are still a few limitations:

1. Receiving is actually "fetching" and you need a file system browser (such as MobileFinder with MobilePreview) to browse to ~/Media/MMSFiles to view the pictures sent. Would be better if we can view the MMS message within the program itself
2. You can only send images. No support for sound or video files.
3. Portrait images get received as landscape (or at least when I view them with MobilePreview they appear that way).

Hopefully, these issues will be addressed in the next version. The settings I used for Batelco customers are as follows:

MMSC: http://192.168.36.10/servlets/mms
Proxy: 192.168.1.2
APN: mms.batelco.com
(No username and password needed)

Sorry Zain customers I do not have the settings for you guys. Try calling their call center to find out. Let me know if they work and post a comment with the settings so the rest of our Zain iPhone users can MMS!

UPDATE: A friend of mine pointed out to me that the Zain Bahrain settings are up on ModMyiFone.com and they are as follows:

My iPhone Gave Me the Silent Treatment

Quite a few people have posted in many forums that their iPhones suddenly stopped making any sound. It doesn't ring when a call comes in, no sound is made when an sms is received and none of the third party apps that produce sounds seem to be able to... produce... sound... lol. And this applied both to the external speaker and the headphones. As if I needed another thing to piss me off today.

This post suggests that the iPhone might be stuck in headphone detection mode (and some other random reasons). Their solution was to insert the headphone plug into the headphone-jack in a quick motion a few times and you will get your sound back. Knowing my luck, this did not work for me, and being as impatient as I am, I did a restore. And of course, that worked.

Now I have to install all my 3rd party apps again *sigh*.

Yet Another Way to Free Your iPhone!

Clock Time Changed Suddenly?

The strangest thing happened this morning. I noticed the clock on my iPhone was 2 hours behind! And because of the "extended settings" I installed (more on this later) I could not change the time manually. The region was set correctly (Manama, Bahrain).

Solution: Just connect your iPhone to the computer and run iTunes. That's it; your iPhone time will be restored.

UPDATE: Turns out the cell tower near my flat had it's time wrong and it kept updating my iPhone clock. This also happened to a friend of mine's Blackberry. Problem fixed now!

"Another Installer"

I just found out about this now! There is "another installer" available for the iPhone called Cydia.

From what I understood, it's got more features like download resume and search! It's a good alternative. You can get it by adding http://apptapp.saurik.com to your list of sources in installer. Once you refresh, it will be under the "System" category. BE PATIENT; It's a big install!

On a side note: I also read that Swirly MMS now allows you to receive MMS on the iPhone. I still didn't get it to send, but I haven't given up yet! More on this later...

If you own a Mac, then you can go ahead and upgrade to 1.1.4, jailbreak and unlock NOW! Download the latest version of iNdependence, upgrade your phone with the new 1.1.4 firmware file and use the software to free it. Then you have to SSH installer to your phone to install 3rd party apps.

I might try this tonight. The thread in ModMyiFone shows a few issues so check it out if you plan on using this method.

No longer shall the Bahraini iPhone owner be duped by electronics stores to pay BD 50 (sometimes 70!) to unlock their iPhone! And this does not apply to the OTB iPhones only, but even older unlocked phones too! And the process only takes 3 minutes, and it's FREE!

It's simple. For OTB 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 just do the following:

1. Connect your iPhone to the PC
2. Put your iPhone in recovery mode
3. Run ZiPhone and click "Free my iPhone"

THAT'S IT!

As for all other phones (OTB other firmware and previously unlocked):

1. Download the 1.1.3 firmware from here
2. Connect your iPhone to the PC
3. Put your iPhone in recovery mode
4. When iTunes detects your iPhone, hold shift and click on "Restore"
5. Browse for the file you downloaded in step 1
6. Wait until your iPhone updates to 1.1.3
7. When it finishes, run ZiPhone
8. Click extra features and click on "Recovery Mode"
9. After you see the message "process finished successfully," click "Free my iPhone"

You'll see your iPhone doing some crazy matrix shit (that means it's working)!

Happy cracking! And don't let anybody tell you that you have to pay money to unlock your iPhone!

Lost || 1.1.3 || Remix

Oh crap I forgot I had a blog! Guess I was too busy with my new year's resolution LOL.

So much has been going on! The iPhone hackers have figured out the 1.1.3 jailbreak, two major fiber cables have disrupted our torrent-tv-show-episode download streak at the WORST possible time (the return of LOST) and the remix requests are still coming in!

I didn't bother upgrading to 1.1.3 yet. Apparently it's quite simple, but very time consuming (depending on your internet connection), and it is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not use iTunes to upgrade the firmware! You require an already jailbroken 1.1.1 iPhone (OTB 1.1.1 or lower). Follow the instructions to upgrade to 1.1.2. Then, in AppTapp Installer, install the Official 1.1.3 Upgrader software, which will download a 165 MB file onto your iPhone to patch it and allow you to use the new firmware jailbroken. Go here or here to read the full instructions. If you upgraded with this method, you can still downgrade if desired.

Lost is back! And because of the writer's strike, this season will only have 8 episodes. That SUCKS, but what to do. It's better to have something than have nothing at all (right Fareed?). I searched for an update of the cable fixing status on google, and found out a third cable has been cut near Sri Lanka as well (the first being near Alexandria, Egypt). Conspiracy theories have emerged claiming the U.S. is responsible for these cuts which were aimed mainly at Iran. Iran's internet is back, but some say the traffic has now been rerouted to pass through the UK and US. Also some say that Israel and Iraq were not affected by this cut at all. Hmmmmm...

Dima's "Empty" was released on Surge on January 24th and is now available for purchase from beatport.com! It features remixes by Balzan, Neos Deos, Serge Blake and myself! You can have a listen to my version on my virb page. The next release that features me on the remix will be a single by my Tunisian friend DJ Mourad called "CIK5", which is also available for streaming on my virb page. By the end of February I should have the next remix "done & dusted" and ready to stream!

My New Year's Resolution for 2008

Happy new year everybody (especially the people who gave me my 54 views so far lol)!

Every year I do this. I think of a new year's resolution and convince myself that I will be able to do it (whether it is going to the gym or picking up a hobby or whatever). As you might have predicted by the time you finished the last sentence, come February, I have forgotten what that resolution was as well as the fact that I have made a new year's resolution in the first place.

This year is a different story. My new year's resolution is very simple, but a very important one:

I'm not that bad at keeping in touch with the family though. I see my parents and siblings several times a week (since I live pretty close to their house). But what about the rest? My uncles and their families? My many many cousins from both sides of the family? And it's not just my own family ties, but my friends as well. I have to make an effort to see these people on more occasions, not just Eid. After all, Bahrain is definitely a small world!

It is very important to keep in touch, simply put, because it shows that you care. A lot of us take that for granted. Have you ever been in a situation where someone you know (maybe love dearly) suddenly died, and you never made the time to tell them how you felt? If your answer is no, then you should adopt my new year's resolution as your own before it's too late. If you don't, you are taking a risk in that the next time you get asked that question, your answer would be yes.

To my family and my friends: I am sorry. I will try my best to stay in touch with you more. But I have to ask you to return the favor as well, because it will make it easier on the both of us!

PS. My OTHER new year's resolution is to return to hard music. It's always been my niche and I have explored the other corners of electronic music styles for far too long.

I read this post on ModMyiFone.com (original from gearlive.com) that reveals some of the features we might be seeing in the new 1.1.3 firmware. The list includes the below:

There are also a few screenshots on the article. It looks promising! Plus, our heroes the iPhone hackers have promised to get closer to hacking the O.O.B. 1.1.2 iPhones once the new firmware is released! They updated with the below statement:

As of December 27, 2007 it is NOT YET POSSIBLE to unlock Out-of-box 1.1.2 iPhones from USA or Europe yet. We are waiting for Apple to release the next firmware update (possibly 1.1.3) to get a new hardware access key that will allow us to write the modified bootloader into the phone's memory.

The iPhone hackers are working hard on the new unlock and as far as I know they have already found the right places to modify in the bootloader to unlock the phone. Just as I said before: we are waiting for Apple to release a new firmware update before the unlock can be released to the broad public.

New Remixes for Dima & DJ Mourad

Wow it's been a while since my last post. Got really busy with the holiday season! Finally found a little time to write something!

Last week I had a couple of remix deadlines to meet. The first project was Mourad Sliti's track 'CIK5' from his upcoming EP 'Small Deaf Country'. Mourad is a Moroccan/Swede I met on myspace who spins awesome deep techy vibes. I just had to be a part of his EP! Jo, the label manager, decided to release my remix along with the original track as a single in January, so I'll post the track up on Virb when the time is right! But if you wanna have a sneak preview, gimme a shout!

The second project was Dima's 'Empty', an Electro pounder! I was way past the deadline but Jo gave me an extra weekend to get my remix polished. You can check out the results on my Virb page (first track in the playlist). Thanks to all who have given me their feedback and I welcome any and all comments on the tracks!

iPhone Arabized

mem9 did a great job with his ArabicSMS app, enabling us to receive Arabic text messages and at the same time giving us the ability to delete individual messages as well as forwarding (eliminating the need for SMSD). But thanks to iPhoneIslam you can now read Arabic messages from the iPhone's native SMS application. It's not perfect, but hey it's a start!

All you gotta do is follow the steps here.

In other news, there are rumors already popping up about the new 1.1.3 update, which will feature the ever requested disk mode storage and a dictaphone (a third party app called vNotes or Voice Notes already does this :-p).

My Worst iPhone Crash (Yet...)

So I was browsing through Installer.app for new applications and started installing some random stuff. At one point my iPhone began to act a little weird. The screen would be unresponsive and the time was wrong. I had MIM installed to change the carrier name but that wasn't working. The only thing I could do was try to run an application from "dock" but even that was unresponsive. I hard-rebooted and the screen kept showing the apple logo and random scrolling lines, alternating between the two. I thought the only thing I can do now is to restore. But to my horror, neither iTunes nor iBrickr could detect my mobile!

After a little panic-google-searching I came across a thread on ModMyiFone that told users to keep pressing the power and home buttons even after the reboot while the iPhone is connected to the PC with iTunes running. After about 30 seconds, the iPhone showed the "iTunes icon and USB cable" picture and I was able to restore the phone again.

Some say the cause of this problem is the new installer, but I'm not sure. I am now pretty careful with what I install, because it's really annoying to restore your phone and install all your favorite third party apps again! I hope this doesn't happen to anymore people, but if it does, I hope they find this post helpful!

Successfully Upgraded to 1.1.1

Finally I took the plunge and upgraded my iPhone to 1.1.1 firmware. I felt my iPhone needed some refreshing so there was no better time to do it. I followed the steps on iphone.unlock.no and the jailbreak and anySim-unlock were successful. Yay! I went on an "AppTapp installer streak" and started installing apps like mad (especially apps that did not work properly or at all on 1.0.2). Then I started modding the phone format.

And it happened...

The iPhone froze. I force-restarted it and the apple logo appeared; and it stayed. I panicked! Connected it to the pc and tried to let iTunes detect the iPhone in restore mode, but nothing would happen. Restarted the pc and nothing happened. I was looking at what I thought was a beautiful useless piece of mobile evolution, dead by my curious and hack-addicted hands.

But just when I thought all was lost, the iPhone spoke. I love that sound it makes when it starts charging! It was alive! iTunes detected it, so I restored to 1.1.1 and followed the instructions again, and now we're back in business! I think the problem was that I modified the old ABPhoneFormats.plist file that I kept from 1.0.2 and replaced it with the new UIPhoneFormats.plist, which is in a different directory altogether. So I searched for the file in google, modified it, then uploaded again and now it works perfectly! So if you face the same problem, and your iPhone seems to have gone into a coma, just keep the iPhone connected to the pc until it gets detected. Be patient! And I highly recommend you upgrade to 1.1.1; there are some great apps you can install like DropCopy, which allows you to share files between iPhones.

How to modify the phone formats plist file: Look for the us key (<key>us</key>). Replace all that is between the <array> tags (all <key> values) to this:

If you want to be fancy, you can replace the original key with this:

Although it is completely unnecessary, but it makes 3 digit numbers like 181 or 196 appear with spaces in between, i.e. 1 8 1 and 1 9 6. Also, dialing with our country code puts a space between it and the rest of the number. Comment if you want more info!

On a side note, the ever useful ArabicSMS application is now in the AppTapp installer repository, so all can install with ease! Just follow the steps on mem9's site. Thank you Mohammad for the great work on this application!

iApp-A-Day: Thank You Sean!

Sean Heber is the iPhone native 3rd party apps developer who promised to deliver one iPhone application per day for the whole month of November. He called this project iApp-a-day. I was really interested in this concept and it his little apps showed just what you can do with the iPhone. Be it a useless but funny app such as Poke or Uncle, apps that use the acceleratometer like Elmo or Scribble, little mini-games like Mix-up or Bard and (my favorite) apps that let you SHARE with other iPhone owners, like Burp, Quest, World and Wallpaper.

Burp, Quest and World each let iPhone users take photos and share them in different contexts. For example, Quest puts you on a mission to photograph something, such as an insect or an old man. World shows you a world map and let's you tap where your country is and share a photo you, and displays other people's photos and global locations. Wallpaper is the most useful app of all in my opinion. It lets you share your wallpaper with other iPhone owners and you can save other people's wallpapers for your own use later. I got a lot of cool wallpapers from this app! Now if only I can find a wallpaper randomizer...

There is one problem though. Even clean and innocent iPhone has fallen in the hands of pervs. People sometimes post pictures of their "members" while bored in "facilities." While this was funny at first, I am getting sick of it. So people, please stop it, we don't want to know you have bedroom issues.

My (Unfinished) Journey Unlocking a 1.1.2 OOB iPhone

To my unamused surprise I have found that as of yet it is impossible to unlock an out of the box 1.1.2 firmware iPhone (i.e. iPhones shipped from the US after November 9th and UK iPhones). I promised a friend of mine I would be able to unlock his iPhone, but it turned out it was the above mentioned model.

I searched through google all morning today and found a few guides detailing how to unlock 1.1.2 iPhones, but this only applies to iPhones bought before Nov 9th (ones that were shipped out of the box with earlier firmware). As the stubborn iAddict that I am, I tried them anyway ;-) You can find the guide here.

I basically downgraded all the way down to 1.0.2 using iBrickr and iTunes (7.4.1), upgraded to 1.1.1, did a jailbreak, and attempted to unlock the device using anySIM, which notified me that the unlock was not successfull. So I proceeded to upgrade it to 1.1.2 again anyway, and I was able to jailbreak it, but the iPhone crashed (and burned) when I tried anySIM again. It kept rebooting so I had to restore it back to 1.1.2 and start all over again. In the end, I told my friend the status of the situation, and he settled for an "iPDA" (for now).

The problem is not with the firmware, but rather something called the bootloader. I didn't really look into detail about this, but it seems that the new version of the bootloader is what's stopping the unlocking process (mainly, running anySIM). But that does not mean these iPhones cannot be unlocked! During my search I found this site which promises to have the unlock method available once the "No" turns into a YES! I will be closely following the status of this and will let you know as soon as it is available (and of course, my own results)!

My favorite dish (+favorite drink!)

Right this has nothing to do with the iPhone or my music, but hey this is my blog and I can write whatever I want in it :-p

A couple of days ago I celebrated my first wedding anniversary (happy anniversary Emani!). My wife and I decided to have dinner at our favorite restaurant in Bahrain: Monsoon. I really like monsoon because the food is amazing and the atmosphere is enchanting! It's perfect for a romantic rendez vous or a fancy night out with friends at a fair price (for what you're getting of course).

My favorite dish on the Monsoon menu have to be the Spicy Sweet and Sour chicken. If you like garlic, this is the dish for you! The chili the chef uses isn't very hot, but you can request an extra level of spiciness if you are of the daring persuasion. If you prefer a milder dish, try my other favorite; the chicken panang. It's a Malaysian coconut based dish that's extremely addictive (it was my previous favorite until I tried the Spicy Sweet and Sour Chicken lol). It was the only dish I ordered for a while!

Monsoon also makes my favorite drink. It's called a virgin Lemon-grass Coolie. It's usually served with some alcohol but it's also available without (hence a "virgin" drink). It is so refreshing and really goes well with the food there! It's a burst of citrus flavor in every sip and it's served with crushed ice and an orange twist.

I always have a good time at Monsoon and I recommend it to anyone who likes South-East Asian food (Thai, Malay, Mongolian... etc). They also have a sushi bar (although I prefer Sato for sushi, Monsoon's selection isn't bad either!). This week they are giving you a chance to experience a Thai festival called "Loi Krathong", which according to wikipedia is celebrated annually on the night of the full moon of the 12th month in their lunar calender. It involves little rafts made from banana tree trunk section, leaves, flowers and other materials. Monsoon promises nights with performances and special menus! So, see you there ;-)

Hi. My name is Ahmed Zainal and I'm an iPhone addict. I'm also addicted to music. I am going to maintain this blog for the purpose of logging my endeavors with the iPhone and my music production.

Why the iPhone? Coz you can hack it, customize it to your needs and have a lot of fun with it! So far my favorite iPhone mods have been ridding my dialer from the US phone format, playing Captain Tsubasa on the NES emulator in ENGLISH and using Sysinfo to view all running processes (which also gives u the ability to kill processes lol). I want to help every Bahraini iPhone owner make the most out of the iPhone by learning through my (and others') experiences through this blog.

I am also a techno/house/electronica producer. You can listen to my music here. I regularly update my virb page with my music whenever I finish a track so if you like what you here, be sure to visit often! I use FL Studio 7 and Adobe Audition 2 (going to get 3 as soon as I get the time!) and have been using the two for almost 10 years now.
